Volunteering:
A decision that would forever change my life.
Shortly after beginning with volunteer work, I realized that not only was I helping patients and their loved ones but I was also really helping myself at the same time! For me, volunteering was a “win-win” as seeing and sharing others’ experiences was actually helping me to face and deal with my own fears.
I have always had a strong desire to help others, and I can sincerely say that for me, it is one of the most beautiful and rewarding feelings! I am a strongly spiritual person and feel that my husband and I have been immensely fortunate in so many ways and I now want to use our knowledge and experiences to help as many people as possible.
Since my native language is Spanish, many of the patients and families I have helped have come to Houston for cancer treatment from Latin America and Caribbean countries. Some of them have stayed in our home while many others I have helped to find clean and comfortable accommodations close to the Texas Medical Center, while assisting them to navigate the complex registration, diagnosis and treatment processes.
My motto
My approach has been to treat those we help not as strangers but as friends whom I am accompanying through a very difficult experience.
My bio
I was born in Colombia and moved to the USA in 2010 to continue my professional career with an international company located in Texas.
I earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in Colombia and a Masters degree in International Business in England.
My upbringing, education, and work experience helps me to better understand the differences and diversities of cultures, backgrounds, and needs of the international patients and caregivers that I desire to assist.
How my husband inspired my vision
My husband Fred and I met in Houston in 2011 and married in 2013.
Fred was born in Canada and moved to the U.S. in 1991 to continue his education at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
I have more than 15 years of professional experience in the corporate world, but after Fred was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 I chose to stop working to be his primary caregiver.
Fred’s major treatments were completed in the summer of 2017 and he is now stable and visits the hospital mainly for regular routine check-ups.
This has allowed me to pursue my vision of INTI Care Services, a company created to help others requiring serious medical treatment to benefit from the experiences, relationships, and resources that I have acquired.
